“What lies on the other side of limits, hon?”

13-year-old Rusha whispered to herself, as she longingly stared at the dark sea from their hotel balcony. An hour of pure solitude by the night-time sea was all she wanted. Yet she couldn’t have it, though Subhro da could. Subhro da, if he wanted, could let the waves caress his feet right till the wee hours, and none would bat an eyelid. Because? Gender.

“Come back here with your husband in 10 years and spend all night by the sea. None will stop you then.” — Ma said. Pushpa auntie laughed. Rusha felt nauseated.

Why did no one share her nausea?
